We had a great visit with the Oosterdam yesterday!!! So welcoming! Hannah and Ken gave a splendid presentation on the US Antarctic Program and the science support they provide as well as the science conducted at the different research stations, including Palmer Station. Only a few of us went and formed a panel to answer questions at the end of the lecture. Great questions, great audience. Thank you, Oosterdam and guests for the incredible hospitality! With help from Barb and Ken, Tiego and I have now officially started our field warming experiment. These images are from Litchfield Island, an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA), for which we received a permit. We take care not to step on moss or lichen and our experiment will leave no trace. It is a sight of stunning beauty, with lush moss carpets. ACA permit 2023-007. Looks like the snow has melted and snow accumulation is no longer a concern. That means we can soon start our field warming experiment with open-top chambers.
Photo below by Keri Nelson, under ACA permit 2023-007. Palmer station has been graced by whales who are returning to spend the summer in Antarctica. They appear to have arrived way earlier than usual. The ice has also melted way faster than before. Rather than think of the dire climate change that is affecting Antarctica, we on station all appreciate the beautiful behemoths that are showing off their feeding skills right by our station. All photos were taken on land at Palmer Station. Photo of me and the whale by Ken Keenan, Station Manager. |
About me
Ever since I was a kid, I was intent in exploring nature. As an adult, I want to understand it. Join me in Antarctica, where I study how rising temperatures are changing the ecosystem. 2022-2023 Blog
